Characters

Characters are the central part to any film ever created, without characters then there is not really a story to develop. But how are characters properly developed? What techniques do film makers use to make these characters so relatable and realistic in the spam of an hour and forty minutes? How many layers does a character truly have behind close doors? There are endless amounts of questions about character development, but thanks to my research I am able to understand it a little better now.

Character development is everything from the name, physical features, to even the backstory. Creating believable characters hooks audiences to watching the full film. How many times have we all watched a film where characters have been completely unrealistic and decide to stop watching the film because it simply just does not hook us or interest us.

There are different steps to creating believable characters, these are just a few:

  • Determine you character's motivation.
    • Ask yourself "What does this character want?"
    • Make sure the "wants" are clear
  • Determine character's main conflict
    • Begin to build in the external and internal obstacles to achieve the characters "wants"
    • Define if character's conflict is internal or external
  • Define how character will change throughout the movie
    • What type of character? Dynamic, archetypal, or static.
  • Create character's backstory
    • Make character relatable
    • Extensive details about life
  • What will your character look like ?
    • Have a clear image of what you want your character to look like
    • Determine specific body language of character
    • Use the people around you for inspiration
This is just a small look into my character research, don't forget to stay tuned!
